  • On his visit to Kerala,the Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, visited the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC) at Thiruvananthapuram and inaugurated three important space infrastructure projects. PM Modi also reviewed the progress of the Gaganyaan Mission and announced the names of four astronauts for Gaganyaan. The astronaut-designates are: 
    • Group Captain Prashanth Balakrishnan Nair
    • Group Captain Ajit Krishnan
    • Group Captain Angad Pratap 
    • Wing Commander Shubhanshu Shukla
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi invites people to participate in the “Mera Pehla Vote Desh Ke Liye” campaign for first-time voters for Lok Sabha Elections 2024. The aim of the campaign is to encourage young voters to exercise their democratic rights. PM Modi has urged people from all walks of life to spread the message about the campaign.
  • Indian Railways restored the Second Class Ordinary Fares on Passenger Trains. The minimum ordinary fare has been reduced from ₹30 to ₹10 with effect from today. 
  • The Supreme Court (SC) of India asked the Indian Coast Guard to ensure women officers get permanent commissions. While hearing a plea filed by Indian Coast Guard officer Priyanka Tyagi seeking the grant of permanent commission to eligible women, the SC bench, comprising Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud, directed the government and coast guard to ensure women officers get permanent commission. 
  • The inaugural “Pey Jal Survekshan Awards” are set to take place at Vigyan Bhawan on March 5, 2024, as announced by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs. The President of India, Droupadi Murmu, will chair the ceremony, which will recognise cities and states for their outstanding work in the water sector.

  • Sweden is set to become a member of NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organisation) as Hungary’s parliament approved Sweden’s NATO bid on Monday. With this, Sweden will become the 32nd NATO member. Last year, Finald joined NATO as its 31st member. 
  • Hezbollah, the militant group in Lebanon, launched rockets at an Israeli air control base. This action is in retaliation for Israeli strikes on eastern Lebanon. 
  • UAE-based Indian businessman and philanthropist Firoz Merchant donates ₹2.25 crore to free 900 prisoners in the UAE.

  • WTO negotiation session on agriculture took place at the ongoing Ministerial Conference-13 in Abu Dhabi. India presented a clear argument for concluding the permanent solution to public stockholding, as this has remained pending for 11 years.

  • Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman interacts with start-up and fintech ecosystem entities and asks regulators to hold monthly meetings with fintech companies and startups to discuss their issues and concerns. 
  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) imposed fines on the State Bank of India (SBI), Canara Bank, and City Union Bank for regulatory violations.
  • India expressed concerns about unilateral protectionist measures by some countries during the WTO’s 13th Ministerial Conference, which is taking place in Abu Dhabi from February 26 to 29.
  • On Tuesday, the Supreme Court (SC) issued a contempt notice to Ramdev-owned Patanjali Ayurved and its managing director, Acharya Balakrishna. SC also prohibited Patanjali from promoting products claimed to cure diseases such as asthma and heart problems.

    • New Zealand’s fast bowler Neil Wagner retires from international cricket. 
    • Namibia’s batter Jan Nicol Loftie-Eaton breaks the record for the fastest-ever men’s T20 Internationals hundred. Loftie-Eaton hit a hundred off just 33 balls against Nepal, making him the quickest man to reach the milestone in T20Is. The previous fastest century in men’s T20Is belonged to Nepal’s Kushal Malla, who hit one off 34 balls versus Mongolia last year.

    • National Science Day: National Science Day is celebrated every year on February 28 to commemorate the discovery of the ‘Raman Effect’. The Indian Government designated February 28 as National Science Day in 1986. On this day, Sir C.V. Raman announced the discovery of the ‘Raman Effect’ for which he was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1930. This year’s National Science Day theme is “Indigenous Technologies for Viksit Bharat”.
