Crushing Opening Win for Sabalenka

As one would have expected, Sabalenka proved to be too strong for Evgeniya Rodina in her second round encounter.

Following on from a first round bye, Sabalenka registered her 14th win of the season – to go with just one defeat – as she dished out a 6-2, 6-0 loss to Rodina in the second round.

In a match that lasted a tick over an hour, Sabalenka did face four break-points on her own serve but managed to save all of them. In turn she overcame her 427th-ranked opponent’s serve on five occasions from the 12 opportunities she got.

Sabalenka entered this tournament after having lost her first match of the season at the WTA Dubai two weeks ago. She looked to be on her way to another easy win in the quarterfinals when she had blanked Barbora Krejcikova in the first set of that encounter but lost the next two.

She will hope to not let her focus waver that badly when she takes on a surprise opponent in the form of Tsurenko here.

Tsurenko Overturns the Odds against Vekic

Donna Vekic has jumped up the rankings charts over this season and entered the tournament perched at 23rd in the world. She was a huge favourite having already won a title in Monterrey last week and having reached the quarterfinal of the Australian Open.

On the other hand, Tsurenko needed to overcome Taylor Townsend and Katie Boulter in the qualifiers to make the main draw. And she was a second favourite in her opener against Lin Zhu as well, which she easily won 6-4, 6-3.

Against Vekic, Tsurenko had started off a 6/4 outsider which lengthened once she dropped the first set after losing her serve three times.

Things turned out for Tsurenko as the difference in their serving percentages grew with Vekic getting just 57% of her first serves in and winning only about 60% of those points in the second set. Tsurenko’s corresponding figures of 82% and 67% respectively ensured she didn’t face a single break-point.

And while Tsurenko did go 0-2 down in the third set, her confidence shone through as she ripped her opponent’s serving apart by winning the next six games in a row.

Can she now repeat this showing against the world number two?

Sabalenka v Tsurenko Prediction and Tip

Tsurenko might have done rather well in this tournament but Sabalenka would have play very poorly for her to drop this one. Expect a straight-set win.
