‘Blasphemy’: Golf World Fumes Over PGA Tour For Showing Favoritism Towards PLAYERS Championship Leader

The second day of the Players Championship came to an abrupt stop due to warnings of an incoming storm. It ended another astonishing day of golf, which was mirrored by the rankings on the table. In a field stacked with superstars, Canadian golfer Adam Svensson was tied as the surprise leader. While his golf game remained impeccable throughout the round, the 29-year-old received a lucky break from organizers, which didn’t sit well with fans on the Internet.

Adam Svensson gets a lucky relief after TIO hit

While the majority of the field struggled with their game in the second round, Svensson remained unperturbed. He shot six birdies to eventually finish with a score of 67. It was preceded by a four-under-par on the opening day, which rocketed him atop the standings.

But Svensson got a lucky break on Friday after one of his tee shots landed yards outside the fairway. While the initial perception didn’t look promising, the Candian was offered relief after informing that his ball landed in the TIO area.

For the unversed, TIO stands for Temporary Immovable Obstruction, which could be a series of tents or boxes that are meant to be temporarily placed and moved within the golf course. According to the rulebook, if the ball lands in a TIO area, the golfer becomes the beneficiary of a drop.

Svensson received the same fate and was able to maintain his score from a wayward position. But fans were quick to notice the ruling, which left them fuming. Here’s a selection of tweets that have surrounded the golfer’s relief.

Who else has been been the beneficiary of the TIO ruling?

The controversial verdict has been in the news not long before. During the Genesis Open in Riviera last month, World No. 1 Jon Rahm received a free drop-in after hitting his driver in a TIO area.

Leading the tournament at that stage, the Spaniard’s wayward tee shot landed in a concrete place. But with the TIO rule in place, he was offered an easier succeeding shot and managed to make par in that hole.

Rahm eventually won the tournament, which highlighted his save from disaster by the ruling. Do you think Svensson will do a Rahm and secure victory at the Players Championship? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.
